A quarter century of digital history in Latin American economic history
Main Article Content
Abstract
This paper provides an overview of Digital History in Latin American Economic History during the 21st century. To this end, a sample of 4 160 texts from conferences, journals, and web directories was compiled. The information was classified according to periods, spaces, and topics addressed. The results show that social network analysis and geographic information systems in History dominate digital practices. It also shows that Digital History accounts for only 2% to 6% of Economic History production. Its development is therefore limited. Furthermore, individual researchers or pairs of researchers apply it with minimal interaction. The hypothesis explaining this situation is based on three factors: lack of technological training, methodological disinterest, and institutional funding structure. Each of these factors is verified empirically. Finally, it is concluded that the inertia of these factors will maintain the same conditions in the coming years.
